Life In Fashion

About Me

My Photo
Rianna Bethany
I'm a student from Manchester, I've completed an art foundation year with distinction and am currently studying Textile Design for Fashion also at Man Met. My main issue in fashion is to recycle clothing and keep the desirable quality they have when new. A piece of disgarded material has so much potential and can be made into anything you want it to be.

Crystalized

After the last post I was lead in this direction, the encrusted diamond face made me research complex diamond shapes and how they look when they are at an abstract point of view.

Any thoughts and feelings onto where this could be developed next or what could look better?

Starting Point

We had to pick a point of inspiration for the new project and this is the starting point i've chosen, it's from the new dazed and confused mag. Photographed by Mel Bles. This diamond encrusted face is stunning took at.

Stage by Stage

Here are the steps it took to put one of the garments together, all the materials used are recycled and were once all camisoles and slips.

I decided to keep some of the existing details from the original cami's. The straps and a few of the vest top shapes.

Built Up

Through out this project i've collected so many images of the work progression. Here are a few
glimpses into what i've been doing.

Samples and illustration

Here is a first attempt of an illustration to go with the samples I've created. Her knees look like the wrinkly knees of an O.A.P at the moment though!

The samples above are sequin and beading ideas to apply to a few edges of the garment. As i'm creating layering effects I wanted to add 'precious' looking detail. The aim of this project is to add value and emotional ties back to your clothes.

These images are tons of pictures edited together to create an overall feel to the theme of the project. They consist of photoshop and illustrator work, scanned petals, colour palette ideas, drawings and water colour paintings and sequins and beading.
If you use any images please credit me.

Sparkly Layers

Here are a few images of garment ideas, made up of customised and recycled cami's. These aren't the final things, just a rough guide of what the colours look like together, i'll be adding layers of embellished lace and adding more detail on a few of the cami edges.

Rescuing Cami's and New Light on an On Going Project

All the tops above are what have accumulated in the store room at work, they did all belong inside garments but retail being as hectic as it is they all get lost from the top or dress they once belonged to. I discovered at work that after they build up in a big tub they get thrown away! Most of them are all from well known brands like Whistles, Coast, Farhi, Warehouse, Oasis etc. So in a bid to put an end to such a waist I rescued them and will be fusing them into the new aspect of the project, carrying on from the eco projects I've done recently and using the Trend Book as a source of inspiration. The slips are all very sheer and light so I will be continuing down the ruffles and gathering route and somehow making these very feminine materials look very delicate and special.

The images below are from the Whistles website and have some very simple but effective looking frills. I would like to create layers with all these sheer materials and possibly add tiny sequins and beads at the edges of each layer to create a romatic, preciuos theme.
Here are a few of the sketches and water colours I've created, like the last project i'm still running with the corsage theme and flower silhouettes.

I wasn't dwelling too much on the colour pallette with these paintings, more just trying to capture a delicate and charming feel, but inkeeping with floral shapes.

Trend Book

For the project just gone we had to create a trend book based on either work we had been doing or trends we predict for the future. The past few posts have been work and garments leading up to the book so here is the final piece. Above is the front page, I called it black rays of light because it was all about 2 opposites coming together, Feminine design and gothic accents.

The back page is from a collection i saw at the V&A exhibition, the Royal College of Arts exhibited their final pieces and I thought 'Jonathan Penns' work was fabulous and this image of the black garment fitted in with the gothic vibe very well so credit to his work. Also existing images from Galliano, Peter Pilotto and Valentino.

Black Flowers

These are a few flower corsage ideas I have been trying out for the trend book I've been making for uni. The idea behind it was that the big corsage flowers on the dip dyed blue top are not permanant and could clip on/off, therefore you could change the look of any outfit with them, so your clothes should last longer and we are drawn away from throw away fashion. All the fabrics in this post are recycled goods. The new fashion illustrations to the right of my blog are also images that have gone into the trend book.
Any thoughts and feelings?

Femme, Frilly but Dark

To develop the work I did over the summer my tutor suggested bringing more dark detailing into the colour pallette. The colours I use are always pale and girly so it's putting a dark but glamorous twist on things. The problem however was what to recycle next? Luckily though I work in John Lewis on the womens fashions floor and noticed how we have a massive container in the store room full of material belts and saches that we can never pair back up with the garment it came from. The pile of them is getting bigger and bigger so they let me take a bag of them home, in all different colours. But for this project the black ones are best suited. So I ruched them all up and am planning to make some kind of garment out of them, here are the first few ideas, I also tried out mixing these bits of ruched materials with the recycled garments from the summer project.
Possibly a skirt or I was thinking a dress made up completely of the recycled saches and belts.

Very sharp looking black frills put with raw edges of this top.

Random sequined flower details to keep the design looking feminine, I'm not a massive fan of it though. Prefer it plain with just the black frills.

Any thoughts or suggestions??

Creating new flowers from old materials

These were pictures I took over the summer. The flowers were apart of the accessories that I made for the 'Up coming Designer of the year award' fashion show. The magazines were laying around so i thought i'd use them as the background.

The Royal College of Arts Exhibition

These are the pics I took from the V&A Royal College of Arts exhibition in London. The standard of work was superb.

Isn't this pearl beaded piece amazing! How much time would it take to sew on each bead!

I absolutely love this illustration, probably because of the colourings, I love pale colours that wash me out! And even though I know they wash me out and make me look dead I still wear them and usually use pale colours in every project i've ever done!!!
More amazing illustrations!

Shoe Heaven

Whilst I was in London I went in the KG shop and absolutely loved the way they had the original illustrations for the shoe designs in big black fancy frames, they lined the fence outside the store and just looked fab! I find shoes a really tricky thing to draw, you can see in my illustration on the right hand side I tend to just do the most basic outline I can and hopefully avoid any detailing. I miss london :-(
If you have any shoe illustrations, let me know i'd love to look at them.
